Community Service

Chair, Planning and Development Committee, Athens City Council.   2009-present.

Member, Athens County Regional Planning Commission.   2009-present.

Chair, Athens Planning Commission.   2008-2009.

Member and Past-Chair, Comprehensive Plan Review and Advisory Committee.   2008-present.

Board Member, Athens Conservancy.   2004-present.   Athens Conservancy is a non-profit Land Trust whose mission is to work with communities and land owners in conservation of important natural resource lands in Athens County.

Co-Chair, Near Eastside Neighborhood Association.   2006-2008.

Board Member, Friends of Strouds Run.   2007-2009.   A non-profit group that assists staff and managers at Strouds Run State Park in fund raising and special projects.

Member, Mayor's Task Force for Strouds Run. 2005. This task force was charged with investigation of the feasibility of the City of Athens assuming operational control of Strouds Run State Park from the Department of Natural Resources.  

Member, Mayor's Advisory Committee on Conservation and Trails. 2003-2005.    Formed to advise Mayor on various natural resource conservation and management issues.

 

Selected Professional and Teaching Experience

Lecturer, School of Family and Consumer Sciences. 2007.   Developed and taught courses in Tourism and Ecotourism.

Lecturer, Department of Plant Biology and Environmental Sciences.   2004-2007. Taught Americans and their Forests.   Developed, organized and team taught international field courses including trips to Thailand and Sarawak, Malaysia.

Lecturer, Geography Department. 1996-2001. University of Southern Mississippi, Hattiesburg, MS.    Developed and taught undergraduate and graduate level courses in Environmental Planning.

Lecturer, Department of Natural Resource Conservation.   1995-1996. University of Massachusetts.   Developed new class in Landscape Ecology for department.   Team taught Humans and their Environment.

Planning Consultant 1993-1996.   Assisted local communities in preparation of Open Space and Recreation Plans.   Worked with citizen boards, aided in plan development and writing.   Conducted public hearings, developed and implemented public surveys.   Developed model ordinances and aided in grant applications for conservation projects.

Invited Speaker, Ministry of Development, Sarawak and National Parks Sarawak, Malaysia.   2007.   Topic: Ecotourism Development and Conservation.

Proposal for a Strouds Run State Park Management Plan 2007.   Prepared in collaboration with Friends of Strouds Run for Ohio Department of Natural Resources.      

Presenter, Tun Abdul Razak Conference, Ohio University 2005.   Topic:   Participation of Ecotourism Operators in National Park Planning in Thailand.  

Developed numerous Open Space and Recreation Plans while consultant in Massachusetts.   An Open Space and Recreation Plan is required to access numerous land and water resource grants in the State of Massachusetts.   Many municipalities do this process in place of a comprehensive planning process.
